Visioning for the Quarter:
Continuing our efforts, we work on rebuilding the community while utilizing its assets. The Selby Area CDC,
Morning Star Baptist Church and land owners on Selby Avenue west of Dale have initiated the re-visioning
process to address development opportunities. The assets of this community- which includes Summit,
University and Rondo communities-are its rich African American heritage, the diversity, and the strength of
the neighbors.
Taking advantage of the variety of businesses, products and events the Selby Avenue Corridor has to offer will
attract tourism and bring revenue to the corridor. For this reason, the visioning looks to build a joint effort by
creating more cultural tourism on Selby that compliments St. Paul’s Restaurant Row east of Dale.
“We’ve enlisted the help of the Assembly of Architects to build a model of the envisioned corridor and to mix
and match potential development projects and business opportunities,” said Selby Area CDC Executive
Director Art Weddington. “By late summer we expect to have the model and the vision to present to the
community.”
In an effort to both celebrate the history and create destinations, area artists have been asked to recommend
public art projects that tell the story of African American contributions in the area. The art will be on display at
sites to be selected.
The efforts being worked on will finish in a vision of a place to visit with things to see and do that are
distinctly Rondo, Selby, and St. Paul, MN.
Are you a small, minority, or woman owned contractor interested in hearing about opportunities with the City of St. Paul and other opportunities within the community? Are you certified with the City of St. Paul?
